From my window seat on Air Canada, I could see New York City as we were descending. From a farm eleven miles outside the nickel mining town of Sudbury, Ontario, with our neighbors a half mile away on either side of us, I wondered what lay in store as I was about to make New York City my new home. From the hinterlands to a metropolis - was I ready for it? With support from cousins in Long Island, I found an apartment, work, and began to enjoy everything New York City had to offer. I attended acting classes near my apartment in the evenings, found more interesting work as I worked for an independent television sports network as their commercial coordinator for the basketball games they televised. I worked as background on several movies and television shows and worked as a day player on The Doctors. I found friends through the acting classes, work, and through sharing an apartment with a woman who became a role model for me. I wanted to be as independent as she was with very rewarding work at a magazine. Lo and behold, I found myself saying I Do to a wonderful, successful, physician. We had a daughter. I loved being a Mommy; I returned to work and subsequently decided to get a college education. I received my Associate Degree at New York University and planned on continuing but Fate intervened. My husband was diagnosed with a fatal illness and passed away when our daughter was 11. Depressed, floundering and confused, and thinking what do I do now with my life, I turned to professional help. Dr. John Elliot Bradshaw, author of The Inner Child had a profound influence on my life. Listening to his lectures when he was in New York City, reading his books, he encouraged people to try what they have a secret wish to do, but fear holds them back. Since an early age, I have loved country music. I penned my first song, Here Today, Gone Tomorrow, lyrics and melody, took it to a producer in NYC. He told me I was talented. How did he know? He wrote a bridge for the song. I had my own version. He said, Yours is better.I was off and running. My daughter was grown, successful in her work, I visited Nashville and decided to move there. I had written several songs by then; specifically, a song titled, Trophy Wife which a young singer in Nashville loved and recorded. A music video followed shortly after that gained the attention of the powers that be at VEVO. CMT also recognized its merits. A year or so passed when I decided to write a romantic musical comedy. It was an outgrowth of the song itself and the music video - an expansion into a story of a middle aged woman who is in the position of having to reinvent her life. Sound familiar? I submitted it to several Film Festivals. It was selected by eight of them for the Finals. It won first place at the Portland, Oregon Film Festival, was selected into the Finals at seven other Film Festivals including the prestigious Cannes Film Festival and the Berlin Arthouse Film Festival. These two Film Festivals rank, respectively, number 1 and 3 in the hierarchy of Film Festivals world - wide. Never underestimate yourself. Never did I think Id uncover a natural ability to write lyrics that are always accompanied by a melody in the first lyric line. Nor did I envision writing a musical play I am submitting for production. A dramatic play is in the works. Do not let fear be an obstacle in whatever your endeavor. |
